The First Christmas: The Story of Jesus Birth in History and Tradition - Biblical Archaeology Society The First Christmas: The Story of Jesus Birth in History and Tradition Interested in the Christmas story and what it meant to the earliest Christians? In this free eBook, expert Bible scholars and archaeologists offer glimpses of the first Christmas as recounted and understood by those who first told the beloved story. Discover what Bible experts have to say about the Gospel stories of Jesus birth, the history of Christmas, the three wise men, the adoration of the magi, the star of Bethlehem, the date of Jesus birth, shepherds and angels at the nativity, the location of Jesus birth, the magi in art and literature and early Christian Christmas traditions. The time-honored traditions of Christmas are dear to the hearts of Christians today. The story of the first Christmas recaptures the imagination as it is retold year after year in Bible readings, carols, Christmas pageants, live manger scenes and crèche displays, to name a few. Perhaps in the midst of all this, we might wonder what the story of Jesus birth meant to the earliest Christians. How did their story differ from the one we tell today, and what significance did they give to each member of the cast of characters? Chapter 1 Witnessing the Divine: The Magi in Art and Literature Early and modern-day Christians alike have been captivated in particular by the three magi in the Christmas story. Author Robin Jensen tells us that early Christian art contains more representations of the adoration of the magi than of the infant Jesus in the manger. What key theological message did the early Christians see in the story of the magi? Jensen uncovers the answer by tracing the magis numerous appearances in art and literature from the period in “Witnessing the Divine: The Magi in Art and Literature. ” Chapter 2 The Magi and the Star: Babylonian Astronomy Dates Jesus Birth Perhaps the most mystifying part of the magis journey is the star that guides them. Scholars and astronomers have tried for some time to identify a celestial event that corresponds with the magis guiding star, in part because it would also pinpoint the date of Jesus birth. Where modern science fails to explain the mysterious star, Babylonian astronomy gives better clues in “The Magi and the Star: Babylonian Astronomy Dates Jesus Birth” by Simo Parpola. Chapter 3 What Was the Star that Guided the Magi? Author Dale C. Allison, Jr. does not look to astronomy for an explanation of the magis star, though he does look heavenward. In “What Was the Star that Guided the Magi, ” he suggests that another sort of celestial entity was the bright light that guided the magis journey to pay homage to the infant Jesus. Chapter 4 Where Was Jesus Born? O Little Town of. Nazareth? The star, tradition tells us, led the magi to the tiny Judean town of Bethlehem. However, many scholars of the New Testament have come to the conclusion that Jesus was born in Nazareth, not Bethlehem. Steve Mason s “O Little Town of … Nazareth? ” explores the the passages in the Biblical text that suggest Nazareth was Jesus birthplace. Chapter 5 Where Was Jesus Born? Bethlehem. Of Course Despite the belief held by some researchers that Jesus was born in Nazareth, other prominent New Testament scholars remain convinced that the first Christmas took place in Bethlehem. Jerome Murphy OConnor supports the Bethlehem tradition using archaeology, the gospels and other ancient texts in “Bethlehem … Of Course. ” Download The First Christmas: The Story of Jesus Birth in History and Tradition and start receiving Bible History Daily — both absolutely free! YouTube. Waterproof mascara an absolute must for this one, ladies. This is Perry Como... And I'd like to tell you the most wonderful, the most beautiful The most exciting story in the whole world The Story of the First Christmas! Now suppose you make believe this is many, many years ago A long time before you were born! You're standing on a hillside, near a little town in Palestine Do you see the man in the distance, walking slowly, leading a donkey? His name is Joseph! Someone is sitting on the back of the donkey And her name is Mary! They've come a long, long way And they're heading for a little town near the hillside On which we're standing! Something very special will happen in this little town tonight! For this is the little town of Bethlehem! Oh little town of Bethlehem How still we see thee lie Above thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by! Yet in thy dark streets shineth The everlasting light! The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in thee tonight! Let's follow Joseph and Mary into the town of Bethlehem It's getting dark and all of the rooms at the Inn are taken But the kindly Innkeeper tells them They could spend the night at a stable nearby! Now I told you something was gonna happen, and it did! A baby boy is born to Mary and Joseph Whom they call Jesus! They have no baby's crib, so Mary puts little Jesus to sleep In the soft sweet hay of a manger! Come, come, come to the manger Children sing and asleep on the hay Sing, sing, chorus of Angels Little Lord Jesus is born on this day! Jesus is asleep in the manger So let's tiptoe out to the hillside near Bethlehem Where the Shepherds are tending their flock All at once the Shepherds are frightened You'd be frightened too Because a great light suddenly shines in the sky! Even the animals are hushed and still But then you hear the voice of an Angel of the Lord! And you're no longer frightened For the Angel brings good news News of a Saviour born this day News of Christ the Lord! The First Noel! the Angels did say Was to certain poor Shepherds In fields as they lay, in fields where they Lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter's night, that was so deep! Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel! Born is the King of Israel! Well, we're still with the Shepherds On the hillside near Bethlehem We hear the Shepherds ask the Angel Where to find the Christ-child? And the Angel tells them to go to the manger And as they leave the sky is filled with other Angels singing Glory to God! And on Earth Peace, Goodwill, to Men! The Shepherds hurry to the manger Fall on their knees before the baby And they worship him! For He is Christ the Lord! Oh! Come all ye faithful Joyful and triumphant! Oh Come ye, Oh Come ye, to Bethlehem! Come and behold Him Born the King of Angels Oh! Come let us adore Him Christ the Lord! And now, look up into the sky! Do you see that bright star twinkling in the heavens? Far away, three men are looking at that star just as we are! They're riding on camels And they're using the star as a guide to lead them to the Christ-child Who are these three men who follow the star? We Three Kings of Orient are Bearing gifts, we traverse afar Field and fountain, moor and mountain Following yonder star! Yes, the three men on the camels are the three wise men The new star guides them straight to Bethlehem To a little baby lying in a manger! There the three wise men present gifts to the Christ-child The first Christmas gifts ever given to anyone A gift of gold, of frankincense, and of Mir! And they too fall on their knees to worship Him And now, a great peace settles on the night For it is the Holy Night! Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright 'Round yon virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild! Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace! This is why when we celebrate Christmas We think of Bethlehem We think of the Virgin Mary We think of the three wise men And the birth of the Christ-child! The First Christmas! Adapted by John A. Richards with Musical Arrangement by Mitchell Ayres Recorded by Perry Como and the Ray Charles Singers With Mitchell Ayres and His Orchestra on July 13, 1959 At Webster Hall, New York City, for RCA Victor Recording Engineer: Bob Simpson.

The animals weren't just witnesses of regular birth, they got to see Jesus enter this world. The Star is a 2017 Christian movie starring a load of A listers including Kelly Clarkson,Tyler Morgan,Oprah Winfrey and Zachary Levi and tells the tale of a donkey called Bo(Kevin Jeun) who escapes his cabin and bumps into Mary and her husband Joseph(voiced by Gina Rodringez and Zachary Levi) who are going to become parents to the messiah(Jesus) after Mary had a visit from god (apparently) who gave Mary the messiah as her child. But when an evil guy and 2 dogs are after Mary, its up to Bo and dove pal(voiced by Keegan Micheal Kay) to protect Mary and Joseph and to follow the star.
Overall I enjoyed this film. Is it as good as The Prince Of Egypt No but is it a great family film yes it is. My only grip and this may sound odd is Zachary Levi. Don't get me wrong his a very underrated actor and has starred in Chuck and my all time fav Tangled, but I honestly couldn't buy him as Joseph,I literally thought of Flynn Eugene Fitzherbert Rider the whole time and I couldn't stop thinking of him whenever Levi would speak.
But my final verdict is at the end of the day its a nice film. May get some negativity with Christians but as a Christian myself I had no problems with it.

I was expecting traditional Christmas type of movie and love story but this was something else to be honest ending of the movie just melt my heart I would love to donate my heart if it can gives the life for someone 💖. The star: the story of the first christmas free online movies

Ryan Duncan 2017 16 Nov COMMENTS Thanks to a grand ensemble of voice actors, The Star  becomes an upbeat Christmas story the whole family can appreciate. Children will be delighted by the animated shenanigans and adults can rest easy through this perfectly palatable movie experience. 3 out of 5. Synopsis Set in Nazareth (9 months B. C. The Star introduces viewers to a young donkey named Bo ( Steven Yeun) who dreams of adventuring beyond the daily drudgery of his village life. When an opportunity to join the royal caravan presents itself, Bo, along with his dove friend Dave ( Keegan-Michael Key) makes a dramatic escape only to be taken in by a young woman named Mary ( Gina Rodriguez. Though initially reluctant to stay, Bo changes his mind when he discovers the wicked King Herod ( Christopher Plummer) is making plans to kill Mary's unborn baby. With help from a cheerful ewe named Ruth ( Aidy Bryant) and a trio of bumbling camels ( Oprah Winfrey, Tracy Morgan  and Tyler Perry) Bo endeavors to see his new family safely toward Bethlehem – and unknowingly helps usher in the very first Christmas! What Works? The Star' s   success can easily be credited to the legion of headline-grabbing actors it somehow managed to get onboard. Aside from those already listed, this film includes voice talent from names like Zachary Levi, Kristin Chenoweth, Anthony Anderson, Patricia Heaton, Gabriel Iglesias, and the list goes on. These actors make the movie, spinning mediocre dialogue into cinematic gold. One could even go so far as to say their high-octane charisma kept The Star from being dead on arrival. That's not to say the film doesn't have anything else worth admiring. The story is clever and clean, parents can relax without worrying their kids will be exposed to anything untoward, and an abundance of slapstick humor is sure to leave the little ones giggling. As a bonus, The Star' s spiritual message never feels too overbearing, though the movie is still tailor-made for Christians. What Doesn't? Let's start with the animation. Sad to say, animation has become a cutthroat industry where you either go big or go home. The Star 's artwork isn't bad, but it never rises above good, and more than a few scenes could have used touch-ups. The story (not the Christmas story but rather Bo's personal journey of growth) is thin. It's clear the animals are just a vehicle for the Incarnation, and while they succeed in this regard, it's at the expense of their own narrative. As mentioned earlier, the dialogue is pretty basic, but seeing as the film is marketed towards children this can largely be forgiven. Lastly, the movie suffers from an overabundance of Christmas music. At first it's mildly pleasant to be serenaded with various songs about the birth of Christ, but the number quickly starts to pile up. One scene even has a song begin playing the moment after another one ends. Christian Worldview Elements / Spiritual Themes The Star makes no pretense about its message. The entire movie is a biblical retelling of the events surrounding Christ's birth, albeit from the perspective of barnyard animals and with a few creative liberties (none which would contradict Scripture. Christians looking for a solid Christmas movie will be pleased with what they find. There is also a scattering of Christian themes such as forgiving your enemies, seeking redemption, praying to God, and serving something greater than yourself. Surprisingly, a rather poignant section of the movie is dedicated to Joseph and his fear of becoming a father. It's a nice touch and gives the adults something to think about. The lone critique would be that scenes featuring angels are deeply underwhelming, but we can chalk that up to the animation. CAUTIONS (may contain spoilers) MPAA Rating:  PG for some thematic elements Language/Profanity: Spotless. Sexuality/Nudity: An angel tells Mary she will have a child; Mary has a baby bump; Mary goes into labor and gives birth off-screen; Joseph and Mary get married; some dating advice from a dove; a jerboa jumps down the back of a woman's dress; a dove shakes his butt and says, kiss my tail feathers. " Violence/Frightening/Intense: A lot of slapstick humor; a bird talks of people eating chickens; a dog eats a jerboa but spits it out; two dogs are menacing; Herod talks about killing children; a frightening soldier is sent to kill Jesus; a man falls to his death (which isn't shown. Drugs/Alcohol: A man drinks from a goblet at a wedding feast - nobody says it's wine but nobody says it isn't. The Bottom Line RECOMMENDED FOR:  Families, small children, church groups, people who love the Christmas story, parents looking to teach their children about Jesus. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR:  Animation snobs, atheists, those looking for more grown-up entertainment. The Star,  directed by  Timothy Reckart, opens in theaters November 17, 2017. It runs 86 minutes and stars  Steven Yeun, Keegan-Michael Key, Aidy Bryant, Gina Rodriguez, Zachary Levi, Christopher Plummer, Ving Rhames, Gabriel Iglesias, Kristin Chenoweth, Anthony Anderson, Patricia Heaton, Tyler Perry, Tracy Morgan, Oprah Winfrey and Kris Kristofferson. The Star " by Mariah Carey) at the 75th Golden Globe Awards but lost to " This Is Me. 7] Plot [ edit] In "9 months B. C. Mary is visited by an angel telling her she will bear the Messiah. A pygmy jerboa named Abby overhears and tells the other animals as a star begins glowing brightly in the night. Six months later, a young donkey is tired of milling wheat and wishes to join a traveling caravan so that he may feel important. An older donkey helps him escape the miller who owns them and he ends up with an injured ankle at the house of Joseph and Mary who just celebrated their wedding. Mary takes the donkey in and names him Boaz, or Bo, and reveals to Joseph that she is pregnant, with Joseph accepting Mary's situation after praying to God. During this time, Bo and his dove friend Dave, plot to escape despite Mary's kindness, but end up staying three more months. Meanwhile, the three wise men and their camels, Felix, Cyrus and Deborah, arrive at the home of King Herod. The wise men reveal their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, but when they reveal that it is for the "new King" he sends them on their way to meet him, but secretly sends his hunter and his two dogs, Thaddeus and Rufus, to find and kill the new King. As Joseph and Mary leave Nazareth in order to head to Bethlehem, Bo and Dave try another escape, but are confronted by Thaddeus (a wolf) and Rufus (a bull terrier) who knew of the home by interrogating Abby. After learning that Joseph and Mary are not home, the hunter and his dogs leave to look for them. Feeling guilty, Bo decides to warn them with Dave joining him. Along the way they meet a friendly sheep named Ruth who left her flock when she saw the star. They catch up to Joseph and Mary in time to warn them, and hide them in a market place where the hunter ties up his dogs. Bo releases the cart Joseph and Mary were using to roll down and cause a chain reaction that knocks the hunter down a well. However, he creates severe damage to the market in the process, and Joseph, unaware of the danger, berates Bo for his actions. Upset with being rejected, Bo leaves and Dave follows until they arrive at the caravan. While happy to have found it, Bo realizes that he liked being with Mary and tells Dave, who admits that he isn't upset and that he just wants Bo to be happy with his decision. Together, the two return and make up with Ruth, and then convince a frustrated Joseph to talk to Mary. Mary admits that it has been difficult for her and that she is scared of the importance of the baby, and Joseph and she make up when the latter begins having contractions. They arrive at Bethlehem where Joseph can't find an inn for Mary. The miller, who just so happened to be there, kidnaps Bo with Dave and Ruth leaving to rescue him. The wise men arrive as well, but the camels, who are aware of Herod's plot, are left tied to a post. Bo ends up in a stable where he meets a horse named Leah, a cow named Edith, and a goat named Zach. They reveal that they haven't been able to sleep because the star's bright light has been shining through on their manger. Realizing that this is where the baby is supposed to be, the animals help Bo escape and he catches up with Dave and Ruth while spotting the hunter and his dogs. Bo finds Joseph and Mary and gets them back to the stable while Dave runs into Cyrus, Felix and Deborah and helps them escape. Ruth finds her flock (who had previously refused to follow her) and tries to convince them to help, but gets unexpected help from the angel who informs the shepherds and the sheep that the Savior is coming. Bo manages to fight off Thaddeus and Rufus, but is outdone by the hunter. Suddenly, Ruth and her flock, the camels and Dave arrive and dispatch with them by having them hang from a cliff. The hunter lets his dogs fall, but they are saved by Bo while it's implied the hunter himself falls to his death. All of the animals (who are now joined by Abby who assumed the danger to be ongoing and the redeemed Thaddeus & Rufus) shepherds, and three wise men arrive to see baby Jesus. Bo realizes that he has been carrying the new King the whole time. Deborah predicts that this event will be remembered around the world for years to come. During the credits, it is shown in pictures that Joseph buys Bo from the miller, and both Bo and Dave help him and Mary raise Jesus. Cast [ edit] Main Animal Characters Bo ( Steven Yeun. A young mill donkey who is loyal yet worrysome. He sees the star one night thinking it's a sign that his life is soon to change. When he hears of the Royal Caravan marching into Nazareth, he feels this is his purpose and escapes to try to join it. But when he encounters Mary, he feels more dedicated to be with her and keep her out of danger. Dave ( Keegan-Michael Key. A sarcastic and egotiscial dove who is Bo's best friend. He joins Bo on his quest to join the Royal Caravan but is more set on that than he is at helping others. Ruth ( Aidy Bryant. Leah ( Kelly Clarkson. A horse who lives at the stable where Mary and Joseph eventually end up at. She loves to sing, but more often than not, her singing is obnoxiously loud, which is most likely caused by her lack of sleep. Zach ( Anthony Anderson. He has deformed eyes and is very hyper and paranoid due to the lack of sleep he got since the star began to shine over the stable. Abby ( Kristin Chenoweth. Honestly the people are the best part in this. All of the animal characters seem really obnoxious, like every other talking animal movie. Joseph reminds me of Eugene from Tangled (I think they have the same voice actor. After watching this movie, I felt like this movie really had a great way to tell the Christmas story which we have heard all of our lives. But, this was something totally out of the box into the animal's perspective of that "night divine.
I think kids will like it b/c of the comedy and the characters. The adults will like it b/c of the way it can introduce the story of Christ's birth to those who have never known about it.
The animation was flawless, the accuracy was on point, the jokes were kid-friendly (a little delayed) but overall, a fantastic balance of what the kids want out of the story, and the lesson that the parents want to the children to get!
Fantastic movie! Great for kids and parents alike.

Good movie but script feels too rushed, not as powerful as moses meeting God in Prince of Egypt. Parents? were watching mary and angel. The Star: The Story of the First Christmas free online casino. Another low effort crappy Sony movie? What - they don' have still enough after Emoji and Ghostbusters. Only a little funny.

Download The First Christmas This is undoubtedly The Christmas story, explaining how it all began when Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable. The three wise men, the shepherds, and King Herod all put in appearances. Its read by the late great John Le Mesurier (and introduced by Natasha. Our thanks to for letting us use this audio. You can buy a complete set of audio bible stories from them. For the original Bible story, see St. Luke. Proofread by Claire Deakin & Jana Elizabeth. Duration: 6. 30. The First Christmas - Mary was sitting in the sun outside her house. It was a normal day; a bit of cooking, a bit of helping around the house. She was having a few minutes rest, when suddenly an angel appeared. “Are you Mary? ” he asked. “Yes, who are you? ” the startled girl replied. “Im an angel from God, and I have a surprise for you. Youre going to have a baby. ” Mary raised her hand to her mouth. “It would be a surprise, Im not even married. ” The angel knew that Mary was going to marry Joseph. He explained the details. “Your child will be the son of God. He will be loved throughout the world for thousands of years. ” Mary thought she was dreaming. “It is hard to understand, ” she said hesitantly, “what shall I call the baby? ” “His name is Jesus, ” the angel answered. “Now I must fly. ” – And he was gone. Mary sat for a very long time without saying anything. She thought about all the angel had said, and she prayed a nice thank you to God. “Jesus, ” she thought. “Thats a nice name. ” Mary married Joseph, and they both left for Bethlehem, where they were going to live. They had to travel a long way, so Mary rode on a donkey while Joseph walked beside her. They arrived in the town at nightfall, and Joseph asked if there was somewhere to stay because his wife was going to have a baby. Someone said: “Try the inn, they rent out rooms. ” They walked down the quiet streets. Joseph was worried about his wife, Mary, who was feeling more and more tired. “Here we are, ” said Joseph. He told Mary to wait outside while he went in to arrange things. A few minutes later, a miserable Joseph came out. “Theres no room at the inn. ” The couple sadly left the inn, and found a stable to sleep in. During the night Mary had her baby, and said to Joseph: “He shall be named Jesus. ” Joseph nodded. “Lovely, ” he said. Not so far away, there were some shepherds looking after their sheep. The angel suddenly appeared, and the shepherds looked surprised. The angel said: “Dont worry. Ive come to tell you some happy news. The son of God has been born in Bethlehem tonight, go and see him. ” To the amazement of the shepherds, the sky was filled with angels singing. “Glory to God, and peace to all men. ” “Come on lads, ” said one of the shepherds. “Lets go and have a look. ” They found Mary, Joseph and little Jesus just as the angel had said, and while the sheep and cows looked on, the men all prayed to God. The baby lay asleep in a manger, with lots of warm cloths to cover him. In those days there was a King called Herod. He got to hear of Jesus and was worried about it. “King of the Jews, eh? ” (For that is what Jesus was called) “Ill give him ‘King of the Jews. ” Not if Ive got anything to do with it. ” He heard that three wise men were going to visit Jesus. They had seen a very bright star in the night sky, and were going to follow it. They knew that it was shining right over the manger. “Go and find where he is, ” Herod said to the wise men. “I want to worship him. ” As the three men left, Herod chuckled to himself. “Worship him! ” he laughed. “Get rid of him, more like. King of the Jews indeed. Im King of the Jews. ” He looked out of the window and shouted to the three wise men: “Hurry back, I cant wait to worship Jesus. ” What a nasty man! The three wise men travelled at night, following the bright star. Finally they arrived, and gave baby Jesus lots of presents. They gave gold, frankincense and myrrh – to make him smell nice. The men worshipped Jesus, and thanked God for sending him to the world. They were just going to go back home when God said: “Dont tell Herod where Jesus is. He wants to hurt him, not worship him. ” “Right, ” said the three wise men. “Well go back a different way. ” They did, and so Herod never found out where Jesus was.
